Common symptoms of bone or joint conditions: lethargy, lameness, withdrawal, reluctance to jump down or climb short distances, irritability, and aggression. At times, no symptoms may be present besides a change in your pet’s personality.
Oral surgery may be required if your pet has been diagnosed with dental disease and alternative treatments have proven ineffective. Oral surgery provides your pet with great relief from the pain of dental disease. We perform common procedures such as broken teeth, root canals, and extractions, as well as major oral surgery such as jaw fractures and oral tumors.
Soft tissue surgery involves most procedures that fall outside of orthopedic surgery, or procedures involving the bones and joints. For instance, cardiovascular, hepatic, gastrointestinal, urogenital, reconstructive, and oncological procedures.
Tumors and abnormal lumps and bumps can appear at any age, however, they are especially common in senior pets. Depending upon the location of the tumor/growth, movement may be restricted. If growth continues, it will become increasingly more difficult to remove, particularly in areas such as the throat or limbs. If you discover a growth on your pet that appears to be rapidly growing or changing, please call us immediately.
Growths can either be malignant or benign. If diagnosed as malignant, we will perform surgical removal and additional treatment may be necessary. Even if the growth is benign, we recommend surgical removal to ensure your pet’s safety.
When addressed early, hernia repair is a very minor procedure. If a hernia is identified, we strongly recommend surgical treatment to prevent enlargement. Hernias commonly enlarge due to weight gain, exercise, pregnancy, or trauma. If you discover a hernia that is already enlarged, your pet needs immediate medical attention to safeguard against infection, resection of dead tissues, strangulation, and possibly death.
It is not uncommon for pets to eat objects that are simply not digestible—socks, balls, chew toys, hair ties, rocks, string, sticks, pantyhose, and underwear. The size of your pet and foreign object largely determines the chances for a safe passing. Some objects may pass through the gastrointestinal tract fairly easily, however, many foreign objects become lodged along the GI tract and can lead to serious, life-threatening issues. Common signs of a GI tract obstruction include: loss of appetite, dehydration, vomiting, inactivity, painful abdomen, weakness, abnormal stools (diarrhea, constipation, blood, odd color), and pale gums.
Do not hesitate to call us if you believe your pet has consumed a foreign object. When you arrive at Pine Bluff, we will take x-rays to locate and identify the blockage and then determine treatment. More times than not, surgery is required for your pet’s safety. We can also attempt to induce vomiting.
